Paper and print quality explained

Matte or silk

Both our papers are 200 gsm. The difference is in the surface, not the thickness.

• Matte (uncoated): no reflections from any angle. Colours read slightly softer and the motif sits as a flat surface. Best in rooms with ceiling lights, opposite windows, and for light or muted motifs.
• Silk (coated): a faint sheen that deepens colour and adds a little contrast. Dark motifs gain life. In return, you will see reflections if the light source sits wrong.

A practical rule: if the room has ceiling lamps or large windows facing the wall, choose matte. If the motif is meant to be a focal point and the light is controlled, silk gets more out of it.

What paper weight actually means

Paper weight measures what a square metre of the paper weighs. 200 gsm is roughly twice the thickness of ordinary copy paper, and matches what most people mean by good quality poster stock.

Thickness matters most for how the print behaves before framing: it does not sag under its own weight, it does not ripple when taped up, and it survives being rolled and unrolled without creasing.

Why colours never match your screen exactly

Your screen makes colour with emitted light. Paper makes colour with ink reflecting the light in the room. The two systems cannot cover exactly the same range, however well calibrated the equipment is.

In practice it shows most on highly saturated colours — hot pink, electric blue, neon green — which come out a little calmer in print. Muted colours, earth tones and greys reproduce very close to what you see.

Room light matters too. The same print looks warmer under an incandescent bulb than in daylight. That is not a fault in the printing, but worth allowing for when choosing a motif for a room with unusual light.
