Choose calm over personal
You rarely know what the sofa, curtains or wall colour look like in someone's new home. A calm motif in neutral colours — cream, sand, grey or black and white — fits almost anywhere. Strong colours and bold motifs are a better choice once you know what they like.

Pick a size that is easy to frame
30x40 and 50x70 are common frame sizes found in most interior shops, so the recipient can choose a frame or use one they already own. 30x40 fits almost anywhere — a hallway, the kitchen, a shelf. 50x70 is right when you know there is an empty wall above the sofa or bed.
Think about the home they are moving into
For a first home, kitchen posters about coffee and food are a safe and slightly playful choice. For a cabin or a house in the country, Nordic nature suits — fjords, coast and archipelago. Moving to the city, black and white architecture is a good starting point.
